Beaudesert Shire has a plethora of bushwalking options catering for all levels of fitness, experience and taste. From the rugged mountain scape of Mt Barney National Park, to the serene treetops walk at O'Reilly's there is something for everyone. However, it is important no matter where you go to follow some basic bushawalking principles.

Safety Principles
With information so readily available on the Internet it is quite easy to do some research on your intended walk. Make sure you choose an appropriate walk for your fitness and navigational ability.
Use a variety of resources to do your research and consult at least on the following books: Bushpeople's guide to Bushwalking in South East Queensland or Take a Walk in Queensland's National Parks (available from the Canungra Visitor Information Centre).

Before you leave on a walk let a responsible person know where you are going, your intended time of return, the number of people in your party, vehicle registration and parking location. Take with you all the food, water and clothing you will need, not only for the present, but also for the future if you are delayed and it starts getting dark and cold. Remember mountainous regions attract a higher precipitation, so be prepared.

Try to always always attempt a bushwalk in a party of four, that way there is always going to be someone with you if an emergency occurs.

Minimum Impact Bushwalking Principles
Minimum impact bushwalking is based around the concept of "take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints." With the population of South-east Queensland set to reach 3 million in the near future it is important that we treat those areas that are still wilderness with a great deal of respect.

Other Tips
• When planning a walk try to build up to the harder walks with first attempting easier terrain and steepness.
• Always try to walk with someone who is more experienced than you to increase your skill level and learn how to navigate using a compass and map.
• Navigational training is available with all bushwalking clubs as well as Mt Barney Lodge where specific courses are run for groups and bushwalking enthusiasts.

Remember you are expecting to enjoy yourself, just as everybody else is so respect the environement and other users and everyone will come to love the beauty of Queenslands Hidden Oasis.
