European carp can grow quite large - many caught are around 3kg. Though colour may vary, all carp have goldfish-like appearance and 'whiskers' at the corners of the mouth. They can be caught using baits such as sweet corn kernals, worms, maggots and dough mixes. Other tips: Burley with bread and boiled grain and use small hooks from size 1/0 down.

The Eel-tailed Catfish can reach up to 2kg and has an eel-like tail, scaleless skin and whiskers around the mouth. These fish live on the bottom, preferring deeper water, weed beds and snags and prefer taking a worm or live shrimp rather than a lure. Caution: They have three stout serrated spines behind and to the sides of the head. They are midly venomous, causing sever pain and irritation if the spines penetrate the skin. Use fish pliers and wet cloth for safe handling.

Australian Bass are most commonly between 1 and 1.5kg. They need to migrate to brackish water to reproduce, so weirs and barriers have caused numbers to decline. It's a great sporting fish, rising readily to insects on the surface especially at dawn and dusk. Popluar baits are live shrimps and worms, and lures are also productive. Caution: Gill plates on Bass can inflict painful wounds if handeld incorrectly. Use fish pliers and wet cloth for safe handling and release.

The endangered Mary River Cod must be released carefully if caught. Catch and release is a sporting way of fishing and good conservation practice. Many volunteer hours and hard work have been spent raising funds to stock these rivers with native fish so visitors and local alike can enjoy wetting a line so please obey these rules.
